A pale maroon sun hangs behind it. Below, black and white dust breaks open in hard brushstrokes. From that disturbance rises the Vermilion Bird, or Zhuque — the celestial bird of the South in traditional Chinese cosmology, associated with summer, fire, brightness, and the full heat of life.

It is often compared to a phoenix, but it is not quite that. The Vermilion Bird belongs to an older symbolic map of the heavens: four sacred creatures, four directions, four seasons. This is the southern one. The summer one. The one that does not merely burn. It appears.

Here, it is caught at the moment of formation — no longer dust, not yet entirely sky.
